OTC and prescription drug misuse and abuse among U.S. teens and adults is an ever-present problem. Whether it?s teens trying to get high or adults trying to relieve pain, the number of unintentional overdoses and deaths has been increasing steadily. This presentation reviews trends in drug misuse and abuse, as well as clinical effects and treatment of the OTC and prescription drugs most commonly encountered in unintentional overdoses.

This presentation focuses on traumatic injuries involving the airway, highlighting common airway algorithms to work through management techniques and prioritization, and using a case study approach to allow attendees to work through the problem. Caleb will discuss appropriate devices and strategies for specific trauma airway situations and compare and contrast different supraglottic airways available for difficult/emergency airway management.

Drugs of abuse and their patterns of use are ever-changing as users and dealers continue to search for easily accessible, more potent and sometimes legal ways to get high. In this session, Lisa will review new and emerging drugs, including synthetic and ?designer drugs,? plants, and old drugs being used in new ways, and discuss the clinical manifestations and toxicity of these substances.
